Honeywell Signs HTS900 Engine Contract with Marenco Swisshelicopter

Honeywell Aerospace and Marenco Swisshelicopter have agreed on a contract that will see the former supply their next-generation HTS900 engine to the Swiss manufacturer.

The latest engine is environmentally friendly, producing lower emissions while also reducing the pilot’s workload. It is designed to provide improved performance at high altitudes, especially in hot weather—made possible because of its dual centrifugal compressor. The end result is a helicopter that goes farther and faster more efficiently while carrying heavier loads.

The engine will be installed in Marenco Swisshelicopter’s SKYe SH09, which is a five- to eight-seat single-engine utility helicopter currently in development. Three have already been delivered to support a prototype program. The engine itself weighs only 338 pounds while generating a power output of over 1,000 shaft horsepower.

"The Honeywell HTS900 engine provides helicopter owners and pilots with twin-engine performance with a single-engine installation. This means better performance and efficiency for a lower cost of ownership,"

elaborated Steve Lien, vice president, Defense and Space International at Honeywell Aerospace.

"Beyond better performance, the HTS900 produces substantial maintenance savings, meaning operators can focus more on keeping their helicopters in the air and running missions rather than on the ground getting fixed."

CEO of Marenco Swisshelicopter Martin Stucki went on to mimic Lien, saying how much the increase in power benefit their helicopters. The maintenance costs were key, too. It may seem obvious, but having the helicopters flying around completing their mission is a lot better for business than having them stuck on the ground needing to be repaired.

The new engine does pretty much everything better than the existing one. The full list of upgrades includes: takeoff power, max control power, SFC, range capability, power to weight ratio, annual fuel cost, engine size, payload capability, and mission capability.
