On September 5th 2016, Peggy Lee wrote an article for New Electronics talking about how carbon nanotube transistors have been found to outperform silicon. This study was founded by researchers at the University of Wisconsin Madison lab. At this lab, material engineers were able to outperform the silicon transistors by 1.9 times in terms of currents. This is considered a huge breakdown for those in the nanotechnology industry. This was something that has been considered a dream for over 20 years for those in the industry. Here is what Professor Michael Arnold has said about the findings. "This achievement has been a dream of nanotechnology for the last 20 years. The hype and importance of carbon nanotubes is much realized yet, and that has kind of soured many people's outlook. But we think the hype is deserved. It has just taken decades of work for the materials science to catch up and allow us to effectively harness these materials. This breakthrough in carbon nanotube transistor performance is a critical advance toward exploiting carbon nanotubes in logic, high-speed communications, and other semiconductor electronics technologies." Not only are the carbon nanotube transistors able to outperform silicon transistors by 1.9 times in terms of currents, the actual performance of the carbon nanotubes is roughly 5 times faster. In addition to this, the carbon nanotubes are also five times better in terms of energy efficiency. In doing so, this could amount to huge gains in terms of bandwidth speeds of wireless communication devices. Read more >>

IBM and Samsung teamed up and have announced the recent development of a breakthrough product. The new Magnetoresistive RAM (MRAM) is manufactured to outlast and work 100,000 times faster than NAND flash. The collaboration was issued to produce next generation MRAM that does not ware out. The product is intended for products that use NAND flash for data storing, such as low-capacity memory chips, wearables, and mobile devices. Read more >>

On August 18th 2016, Matthew Lambert wrote an article for Bit Tech talking about the release of the newest graphics card: the GTX 1060. This new graphics card will have a price of £189.99 including VAT. It was only one month ago when Nvidia released a 6GB version of the GTX 1060. During this time, AMD (it’s competitor) released its own version of these graphics cards but in a 4GB and 8GB variant dubbed the RX 480 and RX 470 respectively. AMD’s graphics card has been well received by consumers as the price to performance ratio make AMD a solid choice. The AMD has the GDDR5 which allows the company to produce graphics cards at the same level of performance as Nvidia’s but has a lower price. Here’s what Lambert has to say about the differences between the 3GB and 6GB GTX 1060. Read more >>

EAA, The Experimental Aircraft Association, has just recently announced that they will now provide members with free access to the EAA Maker Edition software of Dassault Systèmes Solidworks Student Design Kit. Also included in the package are MySolidWorks online video tutorials, the MySolidWorks Manufacturing Network, and other related training and design resources. Solidworks 3D which is powered by the Dassault Systèmes 3DExperience Platform, enables millions of engineers and designers succeed through innovation and delivers an intuitive experience in the many areas of product design, publishing, data management, simulation, and environmental impact assessment. EAA CEO and Chairman Jack Pelton believes that” EAA has inspired, enabled, and defended their members’ right to take a dream sketched on a napkin at the dinner table to first flight and beyond” since its inception in the humble beginnings of Paul and Audrey’s basement. With Solidworks receiving acclaim as the industry’s gold standard for computer-aided design. With many aircraft and kit manufacturers from Cirrus to Zenith designing for Solidworks for today’s top aircrafts, EAA members are incredibly fortunate to have been granted access to this power tool. On July 27th 2016, Tomas Kellner wrote an article for Manufacturing.net that will have a turboprop that is 3D printed in the next generation Cessna which is the Denali. Textron’s Cessna Denali is considered the newest business jet using a propeller engine priced very affordably. The Denali is priced at $4.8 million. The Denali has the largest cabin in its class. This can seat up to eight people. Not only this but this engine is powerful enough to go from Miami to New York or Chicago to Los Angeles on one tank. It was in Oshkosh, Wisconsin where Textron and GE Aviation Systems worked together to present the mock up of the plane’s engine and cabin at the EAA AirVentures airshow. Here is what Kellner has to say about the design of the Denali. Read more >>

Delta Air Lines is going to receive the largest order of CSeries by the year 2018, which makes Delta the largest consumer for CSeries aircraft. This order shows how the CSeries aircraft is outstanding with its performance and quality, therefore; making it the biggest Bombardier Aerospace in commercial aircraft ever. The Cseries is really a unique aircraft from a performance and economical point of view, the CSeries uses the same technological advances as the A320neo and the 737 MAX with a much newer body parts and other optimizations that no Boeing or Airbus can match. According to Lucio Di Jasio, Microchip’s strategic marketing manager for 8bit MCUs, nothing bad is going to happen to Atmel’s 8bit microcontrollers now that Microchip has acquired the company. With a new generation of AVRs coming in the summer there should be no reservations or doubts about the 8bit AVR’s future. Di Jasio openly gushed about his longstanding admiration for the AVR architecture ever since it exploded on the scene back in 1997. Di Jasio also marvels at how far it has come along since the first PIC was introduced back in 1976 and how over two decades of architectural innovations have brought along advantages and advancements in its development.
