Russian Upgrades Helicopter to Increase Speed

Russian Military modifies attack helicopter “MI-24” for more precision and higher maximum speeds. Russia advances to test out their latest idea which evolved into what is known as the Demonstrator PSV “Prospective Speedy Helicopter.” Dispatched on the 23 of December, 2015 from the Mil Helicopter plant near Moscow, Russia.

The modifications on the Mi-24 attack helicopter would be changing their originating roto blades with curved ones allowing them to increase their speed and gain more stability while in the air.

“The designers ultimately hope to improve the cruising speed of the standard Mi-24 by more than 30 percent, or from about 143 knots to 194 knots (165 to 223 mph). That's just the cruising speed. The goal is to push the modified helicopter to a top speed of 216 knots (249 mph) from the current top speed of a standard Mi-24, 180 knots (207 mph).”

The curved rotors will be a new frontier for the Russian Military. Plans on changing older models of fighter helicopters such as the Mi-28 would also change their performance drastically. Not only Increasing speed but, increasing the helicopters climb rate. KERT, a Russian electronic company in charge of streaming the PSV more efficiently and improve flight safety. KERT is to be connected to a wider variety of older models as well. This advanced electronic system goes hand in hand with Russia’s powerful modern engine known as the Klimov VK-500. This powerful engine put out 2400 horse power and are paired in every PSV making it a total of 4800 horse power per plane. The cost to build new planes would cost a fortune, which is why Russia has decided to upgrade their older models and be just as efficient.

Foxtrot Alpha says, “it's likely Russia is pursing these upgrades to its current helicopter fleet because building new, complete helicopters has proven too expensive for the Ministry of Defense. Whatever the reason, Russia's military choppers might soon be a whole lot faster.”
