BAE Systems has been selected to provide remote electronic units (REUs) for Boeing’s up and coming new aircraft, the 777X. This twin-aisle is planned to be released in 2020, with production beginning in 2017. Two variants of this aircraft include the 777-8X and 777-9X. Boeing expects operating costs to be lowered by ten percent, which includes flight and landing costs. Furthermore, fuel efficiently is also expected to be increased by almost twelve percent, saving time on ground.
This passenger-friendly aircraft currently has more than three hundred orders placed from six different costumers, including Emirates, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Etihad Airways. The 777X will utilize the GE9X engine and 787 Dreamliner design for cabin interiors. List price for the 777-8X is estimated to be around USD$360.5 million, allowing for more than 350 passengers. At USD$388.7 million, the 777-9X is expected to carry about 400 passengers.
The installed REUs will regulate the aircraft’s flight control surface actuators. These BAE units are also designed to interface with their Integrated Flight Control Electronics (IFCE), which was contracted in 2014. These REUs locally control the ailerons, flaperons, elevator, rudder, stabilizer, high lift, and new wingtips, which are part of the wing surface actuators. BAE’s contract was chosen amongst a competitive process, but their relationship with The Boeing Company has shown to be strong for more than 60 years. From military to commercial airplanes, BAE has been a leading provider of avionics products and control systems.
