Oshkosh Chosen To Replace Existing Humvee Fleet
Oshkosh Corporation, an American industrial company that builds and designs specialty trucks, truck bodies, access equipment, and military vehicles, has recently been awarded a $6.75 billion contract by the United States Army. Under this contract, Oshkosh Corporation will be responsible for building around 17,000 new light trucks in order to replace the already aging Humvees which are being used by the United States Army and Marine Corps. Oshkosh Corporation was awarded this contract over several other viable competitors, such as AM General LLC and Lockheed Martin Corporation, solidifying Oshkosh’s future for its defense business. Over the span of the next 25 years, the Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corporation will be building as many as 55,000 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, also known as JLTVs, in order to replace a portion of the Humvee fleet as well as some other larger military trucks.
The United States Army places high priority on JLTVs, even after a series of shifting requirements and budget cuts which has prompted the Pentagon to cancel artillery, helicopter, and communications programs. Oshkosh Corporation proves to be a great candidate for this contract, as they have a long history of producing military vehicles. Their brand new design offers a four-wheeled truck that is capable of carrying two to four people, is resistant to roadside bombs and mines, and is also light enough to be carried by air, meeting all of the Army’s requirements.
Oshkosh’s new trucks will replace many of the 120,000 Humvee trucks which were built by AM General. These deteriorating Humvee trucks have been worn out by use in Afghanistan and Iraq, and simply put, are outdated by this point. Oshkosh’s new trucks provide for greater protection as well as greater durability and range to move gear and troops.
