Mirantis has lured yet another investor to back them in their quest to launch their own version of OpenStack. Mirantis started out as systems integrator that took the best OpenStack modules from many vendors to build cloud deployments for customers. Last October, the pure-play OpenStack vendor announced a $100 million round of investing. And less than 10 months later, Mirantis is back with an identical announcement.
This time, the investment is led by Intel Capital and includes a partnership with Intel to help accelerate OpenStack in the enterprise. OpenStack is the open source cloud operating system launched in July 2010 to provide an alternative to proprietary public cloud infrastructure vendors such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. OpenStack is like an operating system for building a cloud data center. Mirantis offers what it calls “a pure version” of OpenStack, and co-founder Alex Freedland believes that’s what separates his company from the big players in the market.
“Mirantis is an open platform where everyone can come in and not be guarded by proprietary walls,” said Freedland. “This is the only way to drive down cost and drive up features.”
Mirantis is an OpenStack consultant that employs about 600 people. It helps companies like Intel, Cisco, and many others create versions of OpenStack that they can sell to their customers. It also sells a version of OpenStack to enterprises that is easier to deploy. OpenStack has become very critical for Intel. As more companies opt to ditch their own centers and rent cloud computing services from Amazon, Microsoft, IBM and others, that reduces the number of enterprises buying large numbers of Intel-powered servers for their own, private data centers.
“Our investment in Mirantis is the next step in bringing open cloud infrastructure to the entire industry as part of Intel’s ‘Cloud for All’ initiative,”said Diane Bryant, senior vice president and general manager, Data Center Group, Intel.
“As enterprises embrace public, private and hybrid cloud strategies, they need choices in their infrastructure software. OpenStack is an ideal long-term, open solution for cloud-native applications and services. Backed by the world’s largest community of cloud developers and leading technology vendors, OpenStack is poised to disrupt every cloud category and our collaboration with Mirantis is well placed to ensure the delivery of critical new enterprise features.”
