How Avionics Test Equipment Ensures Aircraft Safety

These comprehensive tests are typically conducted in maintenance facilities using stationary test equipment, which simulate radar interrogations and GPS-based flight scenarios. However, less complex portable transponder testers are also available for line maintenance, allowing technicians to conduct tests directly on a tarmac or inside hangars without needing to remove a unit.

Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) Testers

Flight Data Recorders (FDRs) and Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVRs) are collectively referred to as “black boxes,” designed to preserve a history of flight operations and crew communications in the event of an incident or accident. Their testing is usually only required during heavy maintenance checks or after any suspected anomalies in data recording.

To guarantee that FDRs and CVRs are capable of recording, storing, and retrieving data as intended, they are connected to a dedicated test unit that sends a series of simulated inputs that mirror actual flight and audio data. This includes parameters like engine performance, altitude changes, and control inputs for FDRs, while CVRs are assessed for their ability to capture cockpit ambient noise or pilot communication. The tester then retrieves the recorded data and compares it against the input stimuli to confirm accurate recording and storage without corruption.

The integrity of internal memory components and backup power systems is also verified during this process, as well as the operation of the Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB), which is meant to activate upon submersion and assist in locating the recorder if it is lost in a water-related incident.
