Know More About 3Com Corporation:

3Com Corporation was founded in 1979 by Robert Metcalfe, Howard Charney, Bruce Borden, and Greg Shaw. The name 3Com was originally derived from “Computer Communication Compatibility” or 3Com for short. The company was originally a digital electronics manufacturer that was well known for its computer network infrastructure products. It gained a foothold in the market by using Ethernet technology that enabled the networking of computers. 3Com also provided network interface controllers and switches, routers, wireless access points and controllers, IP voice systems, and intrusion prevention systems. In 2007, the company acquired H3C Technologies Co, allowing it to become a market leader in China as well a significant market player in Europe and Asia. Its products were sold under brand names 3Com, H3C, and Tipping Point. In 2010, however, Hewlett-Packard (HP) acquired the company and now 3Com no longer exists as a separate entity.

In 2009, HP announced it would be acquiring 3Com for $2.7 billion cash. The following year, 3Com reported a revenue increase of 6.5%, bringing its total revenue to $345.9 million. When HP finally completed the acquisition in 2010, 3Com shares were bought out at $7.90 per share. Before merging with HP, 3Com had previously acquired the following companies: Bridge Communications, BICC Data networks, Star-Tek, Synergetic, Centrum, Nice Com, Access Works, Sonix Communications, Primary Access, Axon, On Stream Networks, Chip Com, US Robotics, Kerbange, NBX and Tipping Point.

3Com offered a wide array of electronics products, including fixed configuration ethernet switches, modular chassis switches, wide area network routers, wireless access points, adapters and connectivity products. Internet access gateways and firewalls, network management applications, network security platforms, IP video surveillance, and local area network interface cards, among others. Its ethernet switches, what it was perhaps most well known for, included the 3Com brand Gigabit switches Switch 5500G, 4800G, 4500G, 4200G, Baseline, Officeconnect; 3Com brand Fast Ethernet switches Switch 5500, 4500, 4210, Baseline, Office Connect; H3C brand switches S5600, S5500, S5100, S3600, S3610, S3100.
